Reel North is the award-winning short film showcase produced by students and staff at the International Media Centre, University of Salford, and broadcasting since 2003 on Channel M, the city-television station for Manchester, UK.
Currently hosted by student Emily Clarke, the programme is available across Manchester via local terrestrial transmitter (channel 39) & cable network (Virgin Media 878), as well as reaching a national (and international audience) via the SKY satellite platform (SKY 203).
A champion of local and international cinematic talent, Reel North also features rare contributions from acclaimed international directors (Alex Cox, Mike Leigh and Guy Maddin - to name a few) who have donated either exclusive interviews or examples of their early short film work. Since 2003, Reel North has screened over 100 short films, and covered a more than dozen film festivals in the north of England.
At the same time, the programme is a vehicle for student producers, crew and presenters who are able to use the programme to hone their technical skills whilst studying at Salford University’s media school.
Working in close collaboration with major film organisations throughout the region (North West Vision & Media, the Northern Film Network, Filmonik and Cornerhouse), Reel North strives to be educational, informative and - most of all – entertaining.
Nominated for three Royal Television Society (NW) awards (2004, 2005, 2006), the programme eventually beat stiff competition from major broadcasters, including the BBC, by winning the award for ‘Best Regional Programme’ in 2006 – an astonishing achievement for a university production.
Reel North: award-winning, ground-breaking, pioneering and innovative. And only on Channel M.
